You'll be fine, just be careful.  I have that scanner and scan 6x4.5, 6x6
and 6x9 with it.  I cut the negs into strips of 5, 4 and 2, respectively,
and cannot scan the whole strip at once.  It's the edge where the strip
overlaps outside the scanner that you need to be careful of with items left
next to the scanner, your own touching or hitting of the negs, etc that
would be the issue.  Just leave room around the scanner and be careful and
you're fine.  I've used that scanner for a couple years now, before it a
2450 and before that a 1200U.  Got an Nikon LS-9000 a couple months back for
a very nice price but it's got "issues" with my new desktop computer so I'm
back to the 4990 until I get that sorted....
