Dear friends,
All joking aside, the advent of the affordable DSLR for a working
photographer is wonderful - when it is used to good effect. My favourite
right now is the family party. The wife has a large family and they throw
large shindigs, and guess who is doing the photography. In film-exclusive
days this was do the shoot, retire to the darkroom for the rest of the week,
produce sets of 5 x 7's for each branch of the family, and collapse in a
heap. Even a small one saw me $ 150 out of pocket and as these are relatives
the layer of gratitude was pretty thin.
Now I do the same amount of shooting ( no digital excess, thank you. All
pixels accounted for.) but the after work is done in an evening and at a
cost of $ 5. $ 10 if I have to post the discs to them. As it is totally
family they can reproduce them as they will.
I can reserve my Hasselblads for me and the studio and the good stuff.
Uncle Dick

Photography by definition is the use of light to create and image. I don't
believe the dictionary discriminates between the media used...look at the
camera obscura...it is an early form of photography by means of recording an
image by hand but using basic pricples of optics to create the image on the
paper.
I hope that landscape photographers (and the like) will continue to use
film. I believe the quality (sharpness and detail) and the feel of the
image with respect to depth, color rendition, etc. is better with film even
when converted to a digital file. I do find the "digital darkroom" to be
easier to work with.

Just curious, do you think that shooting digital should be considered
photography since the the image is stored digitally? Are the pictures
photographs or some other term since they are printed? Don't mean to ruffle
feathers just curious, it has me confused. I'm old school lol

One benefit if shooting FF digital or cropped DSLR digital even is it makes
it possible to be a commercial photographer or a photojournalist. Something
other than a fine art photographer.
It puts you into the ball game.
