[HUG ] Re: Hasselblad, Leica, Rollei, Microtek [2/27/09]

Dear Friends,

I think we are missing the point of photography. Surely we all agree that
it is most accurately defined as the application of money to produce test
strips. This is whether the said items are silver based or ink sprayed. It
does not include the production of test strips with oil paint or pastel
crayons - this is defined as art, never involves money, and is therefore
sacred. ( As in cow....)

As to the choice of equipment or process, this is again best done with an
eye to the exchequer. If someone is paying you to produce the test strips
you must use whatever they specify. Never mind they may understand less
about it than Shamu the killer whale, just do as you are bid and take the
money. Try not to giggle as you do so - it gives the game away.

If you are making the test strips and rejected prints for yourself you may
choose whatever you like. Or whatever you can find. The results will be the
same. I find a big rubbish bin a valuable asset.

If you are producing work ( Work....oh, I'm ashamed of myself for writing
that....) for your relatives or friends you can rest assured that money will
not enter into the equation, any more than will admiration or satisfaction.
So you can go directly to digital and low-res thumbnails at that. It will
cost little and if you do it ill enough they will sneer at you and leave and
you can get out the good liquor and toast the peace and quiet.

As you can see, I have returned to health....

Uncle Dick

As I get into full frame digital there are two reasons whey I've not sold
one bit of my Hassy system.
1. No one would give me anything worthwhile for it money wise.
2. It's mine. I don't like other people shooting with my cameras.
3. And any day now some rogue company will come out with a prosumer priced
medium format back which will jack up the value and usability of the system
again to where it was before the crash. I'll get one of those backs and
start in again. My newish 100 planar will be the front runner of glass I'm
likely to use.
