Evan,
Within the past year or so I bought my first DSLR after owning a couple of
digital P&S systems. What I have found is that the digital cameras have a
cleanness, almost sterile, feel to them. I applaud the porfessionals that use
them on a daily basis and wish them well in their endeavors. They are very
much in line with the reasoning for the original 35mm format...ease of use,
compact, lightweight and multiple frames per load of film...most unlike the 4x5
Speed Graphic "Press" cameras that came before them. But the image quality and
feel of a film image is quite different to the fine art photographer (or wanna
bees).
My first experience with a serious hobbyist that had just bought a DSLR was,
and I quote, "Oh, I have 2 of those film cameras here in my bag. But within
the last 2 weeks I have shot over 2000 images with my new DLSR." My first
thought was "Did you get a photograph?" The 35mm film camera and the use of
roll film afforded the photo-journalist the ability to shoot rapidly in order
to capture the moment. Larger format cameras are slower. And as with the
smaller format cameras there is as much thought is put into the technical
aspects but I believe even more thought is put into the lighting and
composition when using larger, hence film, cameras.

Patrick,
I had access to my choice of scanners (drum and Kodak/Creo Hi-end flatbed
scanners), so I never invested in a digital camera till about 4 years. I bought
a Canon P&S for my wife and we both used it.
Prior to that, I used strictly film based 35mm and MF cameras. Because I had
access to these scanners and digital proofers (Fuji PictroProof, Kodak
Approval, Canon Large format and Epson 3880)
I tend to scan just the photos that I wanted. Yes the files were big and I
enjoyed doing minimum amount of color correction. If the exposure for the shot
was perfect, it would not required too much post retouching.
I work in the same similar workflow as you. I have in my basement my uncle's
darkroom setup of an Omega D2V and a Beseler 23 XLCIII with trays, drums, and
agitator. I was always too busy to set up my darkroom. I am somewhat glad that
i didn't. I bought into a used Kodak/Creo Eversmart scanner that I plan to use
in conjunction with my Canon FS4000US scanner. As for final proofer, I will
send them .
