[HUG ] Re: Hasselblad, Leica, Rollei, Microtek [2/27/09]

Patrick,

I had access to my choice of scanners (drum and Kodak/Creo Hi-end flatbed scanners), so I never invested in a digital camera till about 4 years. I bought a Canon P&S for my wife and we both used it. Prior to that, I used strictly film based 35mm and MF cameras. Because I had access to these scanners and digital proofers (Fuji PictroProof, Kodak Approval, Canon Large format and Epson 3880) I tend to scan just the photos that I wanted. Yes the files were big and I enjoyed doing minimum amount of color correction. If the exposure for the shot was perfect, it would not required too much post retouching.

I work in the same similar workflow as you. I have in my basement my uncle's darkroom setup of an Omega D2V and a Beseler 23 XLCIII with trays, drums, and agitator. I was always too busy to set up my darkroom. I am somewhat glad that i didn't. I bought into a used Kodak/Creo Eversmart scanner that I plan to use in conjunction with my Canon FS4000US scanner. As for final proofer, I will send them .

I have been shooting film over the years and find after the scanning process that the work flow is similar to the digital only work flow. The only exception is the dusting of the image with either the clone or band-aid tool. Slight color correction is performed and then layering and adjustments to the individual layers is performed. The entire file is then flattened and sized at a resolution of 400dpi...this is down from the 4000ppi scan on my Nikon 8000. The longest single part of the work flow with respect to time is the scan...approx 30-45 minutes. The files are huge, in the realm of 400+mb, so the more memory the better. Patrick St.Cin

I guess that my question would be a stupid one of nature. Beside the fact of the FF digital SLR from Canon, Nikon, and Sony (in order of best to passable), what is the exactly benefits of going this route? Especially taken into consideration of the higher level of Post-Production work required for all digital files. There appears to be a distinct methodology within the digital workflow to make their digital files as close as possible in looking like Film Files having the greater 3-D look and dynamic range.

Granted that both system, Film based and digital ready files are not perfect, there appears to be a many software and program out there to help the digital files achieve that Film Look. Am I wrong here?

For those individual still using film based system and having their images scanned, what is your digital workflow here?

For those in the digital SLR system, what is your digital workflow Post-Production and Why the need for it?

Unfortunately not everyone has the where-with-all to do this. I went to FF DSLR and had to sell all my Hassy gear to do it. I still have deep pangs of remorse, but I've managed to convince myself (almost) that it was a good move. I am somewhat consoled with having gotten a 4x5 kit, so I can still shoot film. Sometimes, though, that makes me miss my Hassy's more. I may buy a small Rollei outfit yet...

As I get into full frame digital there are two reasons whey I've not sold
one bit of my Hassy system.
1. No one would give me anything worthwhile for it money wise.
2. It's mine. I don't like other people shooting with my cameras.
3. And any day now some rogue company will come out with a prosumer priced medium format back which will jack up the value and usability of the system
again to where it was before the crash. I'll get one of those backs and
start in again. My newish 100 planar will be the front runner of glass I'm
likely to use.
