I take a different opinion from Jim....... Mind you, his experience is
substantially greater than mine.....so take all of this with the proverbial
grain of salt....
If you are creating printed images of sizes that are pretty big, say up to
11x14, there will be NO differences. Why? Because, first of all, you will
not be using the complete file. You do not need all those pixels, so the
print driver throws them away.
Second.... purely based upon the premise that you will be doing a digital
print, from a digital printer, the print SW takes whatever pixels you send
it, and does a bit of SW magic to get a good print. Therefore the LENS is
not the issue.. it is the print SW that determines the quality of the final
print. In the limit, a Kodak P+S digital camera of cost around $50 will
make as good a print as a $4500 Hasselblad lens on film and a $25K scanner..
Especially true the smaller the print.
Now more pixels = more ability to crop, adjust, move, correct, or otherwise
change the actual pixels into something else.... but as a factor of pure
output, I don't think it makes a difference what lens you use.....
This is more than a bit controversial, and I would love to hear Jim's take
on this....
Jim makes some really large digital prints, where smaller file sizes would
just show up as garbage..... But it is he smaller prints, say 8x10, 11x14,
where I really doubt that any lens improvements or scanner issues would make
a difference.....
