Here is what I mean by diffraction :
http://www.farines-photo.com/temp/v700_diffraction.jpg
Right picture has clearly diffraction, because film thickness is
involved here, and not on the left image. It's subtle but makes a
(small) difference.
I'm sure betterscanning film holder is better than standard. Maybe I
will someday give it a try ...

Hi Jean-Luc,
I have never noticed any diffraction (light/image bending). I will
say that if you think you get sharp scans using the stock epson film
holder you would be blown away by the aftermarket one. It's more
rigid and can be adjusted more precisly. You can check it out at www.betterscanning.com
they make these holders for many scanners.

Hi Franc,
OK, didn't know that CCD was on the bottom, but it looks logic as it
is the bulkier part. I have an explanation for diffraction in this
case : in fact when you put argentic face on the bottom, the light has
to go throw the film causing in this case the diffraction.
OK for tolerances. Anyway, global users experience with this V700
scanner tend to say that it is better to elevate the holder to get
best performance in sharpness, and I confirm this definitely. But make
your own tests to be sure.

Hi All,
I would tend to disagree with Jean-Luc on 2 points about the V700.
First the
lens and CCD are in the bottom part of the scanner, the top
housing has the
lamp only. Secondly, you need to adjust the film holder for your
individual
unit. Epson realized that the manufacturing tolerances are not
close enough to
produce the sharpest scan so they made the film holders adustable
and the
aftermarket holders have even more precise adjustment. I
regularly scan MF
film 6x12 (ISO100)at 3200 dpi emulsion side down and print 12x24
inch prints. I
have found that at 3200 dpi I can see the film grain before I can
see the
pixels from the scan.

Hi all,
I 'll give you here some of my experience with V700 that I use
regularly now from 3.2006.
It is a great cheap scanner, especially for MF. The only correction
you have to make to produce top sharp scans is to put film holder
adjusters to max height (3.5mm, symbolized by a+). This is because
films must have their argentic side facing up (Sensors are on the
top
cover of the scanner) and films tend to naturally curle DOWN in this
case.
I made test by putting film face down, but you get in this case
diffraction problems on fine details, because light goes through
entire film thickness.
V750 is maybe even better in details rendition because of a better
scanning lens, but never had the chance to test it.
Anyway, here is links to my blog pages showing an example of a hassy
scan made with this scanner and the workflow I used.

I understand the results from those two scanners are quite good.
Though reviews suggest it's not a huge improvement over the 4990,
which is one I use. Email me privately and I'll be happy to show
you a scan done at 2400 dpi on a Rollei SL66 image shot with a 80
Planar lens that will blow your socks off. I can email you both a
JPEG screen size of the image scan and a 100% full res view of a
portion showing the sharpness and resolution. Can a Nikon 9000 do
better? Of course but for printing up to 20x20 or so the 4990 does
a darn good job for the price. And being one generation back from
the V700 and 750 they can be had for a song.

Subject: [HUG] Epson V700 vs V750
Hi all.
I want to scan my Hasselblad color negs while I'm waiting for the
price on
a
P25 digital back to continue to drop lower.
I see Amazon is selling the Epson V700 flatbed scanner for $473,
and the
V750 for $732, both with free shipping.
Amazon users of the V700 seem to be quite happy with the V700,
while
Amazon
users of the V750 seem to be quite unhappy with the V750.
Anyone have any suggestions, experience or comments regarding this
subject?
Thanks,
Dr. Rob
