[HUG ] Re: [HUG] Re: Epson V700 vs V750

Jean-Luc,

The specs are pretty impressive. I'm surprise that a sub - $1000 scanner could hold its own. Taking into account the big price difference from the Epson to an Imacon, I guess that its all relative to price and performance.

Film scanners such as the Microtek 120TF and Nikon Super Coolscan LS9000 are in a separate category by itself. The Microtek 120TF has been discontinued. The Nikon is backordered.

Flatbed scanners such as the Epson V700 & V750-M Pro, the newer Microtek M1 / F1 and its Pro counterpart are newer alternate choices. The Creo Eversmart IQ series are fantastic, but at a steep price.

Drum scanners beside the usual Howtek, Hell Tango and IDG, are not widely supported as when scanning was supreme for digitilizing images. Imacon pretty much has this market to themselves. Their product support is still currently in place and improvements are still a part of its business.

I guess that I have to make a hard decision to go either with a Nikon LS 9000 film scanner (still in production and with good support) or an an older Imacon scanner (same status as product is sitill supported).

Any long term users of the other named scanners out here? How has the scanners held up over the years and what is replaceable and what isn't replaceable on these sub $1000 scanners?

Are the lamp bulb something that could be easily replaced by you or does it require factory servicing? Are they even replaceable at all?

For the flatbed scanners, how about the glass surfaces? Are the glass AntiNewton coated and are these also replaceable?

How has the manufacturer's support been for your scanner?

I might be looking into the scanner life too deeply, but I don't wan to run out there to buy a new scanner in a few years if it dies on me just doesn't meet my expectation.

Hi Evan, max size possible to scan with V700 is 6x6 at 3200 dpi in 48 bits. My advice is to go definitely with 48 bits because you get much better results in shadows details (better D-Max).

Jean-Luc,

Is there a maximum size that the scanner would allow a 6 X 6 image to be in size by inches and dpi without any loss of shadow detail and the d-max range?

I looked around for an used Imacon scanner, but they are a rarity on the used market and fetch a big hefty price.
