I contacted Paul at HB NJ. Unfortunately I was unable to speak to him directly,
but he left the following instructions on my voice mail.
He said to remove the prism and focusing screen, breathe on the mirror to fog
it up, and wipe it gently with a microfiber cloth or Kodak lens tissue. If
residue remained (especially sea spray), a lens cleaning solution sprayed
sparingly on lens tissue and then used to wipe the mirror gently could be used.
He stated this may need to be done several times to remove the
residue/streaking remaining after the first attempt.
His biggest concern was misalignment of the mirror; he made no mention of the
risk of damaging the surface using this technique.
I left him a message thanking him and asking him to just let me know if there
was a risk of damaging the mirror because my understanding was it was a surface
coating that could be damaged by the slightest of wiping (though his technique
indicated this was not so).
I'll let you know if I hear anything back...
