[HUG] Re: EPSON flatbed problem

Thanks for the link; that is a thorough review. I also looked at
www.betterscanning.com, referenced in photo-i. Although the height of the
film holder is obviously critical, I doubt that Epson would knowingly turn
out a product that causes an out-of-focus condition in 100% of the MF cases.

Maybe, maybe not. I can say with certainty that either Epson has poor QC, or there is a wide range of what people consider acceptable sharpness.

I got the 4870 when it was first released. I immediately decided that the results for 35mm were beyond what I would consider even barely acceptable, and I think many would agree with me. I did, however, think there was hope for 2 1/4. That's when I gor my Minolta 5400.

I ordered the Doug Fisher film holders. This was beore the adjustable height versions were made. The results were what I would call just OK for small prints. The holders are well made. I tried more, and then, I got my Minolta MultiPro. I now use the Epson exclusively as a flatbed. If you have modest requirements, the replacement holders are a bargain compared to the alternatives.

The worst part of the Epsons for me is the amount of crud and dust that build up on the inside of the glass. I don't feel comfortable taking it apart, and I don't know anyone that is. I gather this is a common problem with flatbeds.
