Hi Oliver,
Scans from a flatbed are always a bit soft. Yo should apply usm to them.
Commercial scans already have that done during the process at the lab.
i also read somewhere that the height of the filmholder is quit
important for this scanner. Look
here:http://www.photo-i.co.uk/Reviews/interactive/Epson%20V700/page_1.htm

Last week I took delivery of an EPSON V500 flatbed scanner. Using the MF
film strip holder I made several test scans of 6X6 negatives, following the
procedure given in the product instructions. The resulting images are not
sharp. This result obtains regardless of film orientation (emulsion up or
down), scan resolution or scanning software (EpsonScan or VueScan, using the
appropriate settings for the negative material). The negative strips are
flat.
For comparison I have 300ppi scans of the same negatives that NewLab made
after developing the film. The difference in sharpness and detail is
dramatic. Images from scanning print media are sharp. There is no focus
adjustment.
What could cause this unwanted result?
Oliver
