My recollection is that optical devices (lenses, mirrors, etc.) were cleaned
with ethyl (grain) alcohol. You can purchase 190 proof grain alcohol at most
liquor stores. It's sold for use as a mixer in punches.
If cleaning the HB mirror fails, you can always drink the leftover alcohol,
provided you water it down some.
An anecdote from my past. When I was taking a course in histology (staining
and preparing tissues for study under a miciroscope) as part of my master's
level biology minor, we had carboys of ethyl alcohol for use in the lab. One
of the lady instructors came in one day and said she had been working in a
histology lab for 20 years and had never tasted grain alcohol. So she poured
herself a beaker and downed it! (190 proof alcohol is a very strong oxidizing
agent, and causes severe burns.) She had to be rushed to a hospital.
Good luck cleaning the mirror. David at the top of the Chesapeake Bay.
