Dear Friends,
And with that greeting I can hear the experienced members of this
list running for cover....
It is Uncle Dick back again with some thoughts on the prices of
Hasselblad equipment versus the costs of Hasselblad equipment. And how to
tell the two apart.
Let me warn the novices that this will be a long post. I am fed and
warm and in front of a computer keyboard and you will all have to endure it.
The post may come in several sections, like a great Northern Express train.
Feel free to throw yourselves on the track at any time.
What does something cost? It costs lifetime. Part of yours, part of
the chap who made it, part of the person who sold it to you. If it is
particularly good, or rare, or illegal, the cost is greater. But if you are
reading this with a Hasselblad in hand, it is a price that has already been
paid. The deal was done, and the goods are yours, and the cost is paid. You
are in the free zone.
What is something worth? It is worth what someone else will pay you
for it( remember those qualifications of good or rare, etc. ) or it is worth
what you can do with it. Currently the state of the photographic game is
such that the first figure is likely to be quite a bit less than the second.
This means.....if you are holding that Hasselblad.....hold it tight....YOU
WIN!
Yes you do. You have a tool that can't be sold - can't be justified
- can't be bragged about - but CAN do the business. You have a Swedish
viking sword and all around you your fellow photographers are holding
digital rattan canes. Test yours out against theirs - if they are game.
Uncle Dick
