this is a low cost ($10000) device which uses 120 FPGA's to do parallel computation work which uses little communication, such as brute force searches. it can crack DES in 7 days average at 2^35 attempts per second. it can likely be programmed to assist in hashcash stamp generation, which would be interesting for spammers.
