Remember when R5 boots the first time after install, and NetPositive comes
up with that "Welcome to BeOS" page? IMO, that would be a great place for
incorporating third-party apps into Haiku. The webpage welcome could have
download/install links for various useful apps (whether they install from
the CD or from the web). Or, if the user is connected to the web, the
browser opens to a page on the haiku-os.org site that can show the "10 most
useful/recommended apps", the "app of the week/month", the "5 newest apps",
etc (same idea as the sidebars on the BeBits page). This page on the
haiku-os.org site would also probably be pre-loaded as a bookmark as well as
the "Welcome to Haiku" page, the "Haiku User's Guide" page, etc.
Something like that would give users easy access to popular and useful apps,
but would not install anything the user did not elect to download/install.
Also, it would serve as a useful tutorial for new users on finding,
downloading, and installing new applications and utilities (especially in
the future when/if Haiku gets its own shiny installer system).
On a separate note, it is usually better to keep the bundled apps that were
written by somebody besides the Haiku team to a bare minimum. If it came
with the OS and something doesn't work, users will come to Haiku for
support, and it looks bad if we can't fix their problem because "we didn't
write that app". This sort of thing is a problem with a lot of other OS's,
Be did a good job of avoiding it, and I hope Haiku follows Be's lead.

Perhaps have a user vote on which could be included.
There are several small applications that are invaluable and extremely
useful and probably should be included in an operating system.
I just looked at Bebits and saw theScheduler as a #1 rated app...
