Whatever still looks good in 16x16 would be a good option IMO :-)
One reason why the spanner could be the best option, though, is a
design foundation of BeOS/Haiku: to deliver the best defaults possible.
You should only need to go into the preferences to "fix" something
(like the screen resolution), not just to check if everything is
configured okay :-)
BTW, the Amiga used question marks to indentify the preferences icons -
that might be questionable, too, though ;-)
