Yes I know I'm perpetuating a undead thread.
I just want to say, AFAIK, ...
Many security problems arise with PATH=".:$PATH" when a script calls a program.
Especially if that script happens to be running as root. The other issue arises
from special accounts like ftp and www. You do not want an internet site user
to be able to run a program in '.'.
