Couldn't it be the job of an Install Server:
It could make an history of all installs and uninstalls allowing for
friendly undos and redos. If it saved this history to a file, it could act as
a backup tool also, and reinstall all your apps in one shot.
(hmm? and an Update Serv... i'd better post to Glass Elevator :) )
