No, only the end of the SCSI chain has the terminator. It's there to stop
"ringing" where the signal pulse bounces off the end of the cable and
interferes with newer signal pulses. There's also usually a built-in
terminator at the controller card (maybe there's a BIOS setting or jumper to
turn it on and off).

As far as I know 16384 is the maximum (works for me with a 768MB system). That
settings file needs to be on the drive where you booted the kernel from,
otherwise it is ignored (such as when you boot from CD-ROM, which can make
installation tricky). To test if this is still the cause of the lockups,
reduce your RAM to 128MB.
