Used to be with SCSI you'd get the drives locking up if the termination wasn't 
done right, but only when transferring a lot of data.  But that's not your 
problem.  Might be loose IDE data and power cables.  But likely not.

Also, since you have a new system, perhaps you ran into the too-much-memory 
bug?  If you now have more than 128MB, then you can have occasional disk 
transfer problems due to the system cache being overwritten by something else.  
This problem can also show up when accessing a device with larger blocks than 
usual, like a CD.  To fix it, increase the cache size.  There's a tip on how to
