Hi all, I'm an IT professional specialising in databases but I also take a keen interest in operating systems. I have recently built a VMware ESXi 4 server at home as a test lab. With the news of the new Haiku release this week, I downloaded the Haiku Alpha 1 vmdk having never tried BeOS or Haiku before. I just wanted to express my surprise at how fast this thing is, even running as a VM. My ESXi host is fairly modest (specs: AMD Phenom II 3GHz Quad core, 8GB RAM, 4xRAID-5 SATA II disks local storage) but haiku booted so fast i couldn't believe my eyes - it was something like 3 or 4 seconds. Likewise shutting down took a few seconds - what a nice change to the misery I have to put up with using Windows XP at work. The GUI also was fast, uncluttered and very responsive. In the last couple of years I've become a big fan of Ubuntu on the desktop and Debian on the server, but I will be taking a keen interest in the development of Haiku in the future. I just hope that the userbase can grow as it seems to be to be a very elegant system. Bravo! Mark.
