One possible way forward for research might be to look at the
successful UIs out there, and see what works and what doesn't. Also,
Windows and MacOS X, for example, have subtle as well as obvious
differences, and it's not certain that one isolated UI feature would
fit in the overall design of the other platform.
A UI has to be a well balanced. We can't add everyone's favorite UI
feature. Keep it simple. Kill your darlings. Too many chefs make a
recepy for lousy soup. Etc.
