This is going to sound really stupid, but how do I get the vmware image into
a virtual machine?

Chris, this works for me...

Extract the image to the hard disc

enter the text between the dashes into a text file named haiku.vmx putting the name of the image in
ide0:0.fileName = "2005-10-31_09-00_vmware"

-----------------------------------------------------------
config.version = "8"
virtualHW.version = "3"
memsize = "256"

ide0:0.present = "TRUE"
ide0:0.fileName = "2005-10-31_09-00_vmware"

floppy0.fileName = "A:"
ethernet0.present = "TRUE"
ethernet0.connectionType = "nat"
usb.present = "TRUE"
sound.present = "TRUE"
sound.virtualDev = "es1371"
displayName = "Haiku"
guestOS = "other24xlinux"
nvram = "haiku.nvram"
scsi0:0.redo = ""
ethernet0.addressType = "generated"
uuid.location = "56 4d ee 88 31 d2 58 57-dd c7 e6 00 fe 71 59 8a"
uuid.bios = "56 4d ee 88 31 d2 58 57-dd c7 e6 00 fe 71 59 8a"
ide1:0.autodetect = "TRUE"
ethernet0.generatedAddress = "00:0c:29:71:59:8a"
ethernet0.generatedAddressOffset = "0"
checkpoint.vmState = ""
tools.remindInstall = "TRUE"
ide0:0.redo = ""
-----------------------------------------------------------

Then using the VMWare player from http://www.vmware.com/download/player/
open the VMX file and accept any prompts and it should run fine.

Regards
Simon Kennedy
