[openbeos] Re: app_server

MacOS had a program called Kaleidescope that could change the look of stuff
similar to the `decors` options in BeOS. Judging on the large amount of
cool-looking Kaleidescope "plug-ins", I don't think there was much
programming involved. BTW, This was an OS 8/9 program. While they were not
new window managers, what other GUI's do have window managers? Only X. Even
though Mac OS X has the "candy-looking" interface, they are going for
simplicity and style. And it CANT be changed like XP. Do people buy Macs
because the GUI looks cool? No. Do people buy XP because you can change the
look? No. It might be a nice feature, but people don't buy OS's because what
they look like.

Hello peeps

Warning: I'm not a programmer, just a lurker but...

When the app_server is finished and becomes a good replacement for the
stock one, will it be easy to add new decors? I'm assuming you'd still
need programming knowledge of course - not just graphical skills, so I
might not be able to do it myself but hopefully it would be doable.

Taking this a bit further - maybe the whole window design could be
changed rather than just the border. Maybe this is not possible. Maybe
more than just a new app_server would be required but I wouldn't know,
I'm not a programmer. If it *is* possible then my nipples would get a
bit hard because it means we could possibly have a spruced-up interface
even before OB is finished. I'm not talking about change for the sake of
change but BeOS is visually a wee bit dated now.

PS. I'm not saying OB dev's should do this, just asking if its possible.
Perhaps that makes it OT.

Ta-ta,
Kevin
