I think there's a big chance that the profile is corrupt. You need to remove a
file in your profile (it will get regenerated on startup).
Remove ~/config/settings/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/[profiledir]/compreg.dat
and see if that helps. [profiledir] is one of the profile-dirs with a funny
name.
Switching between different versions of Firefox can do that sometimes.
