I think once it is clearly communicated that the wiki is an
appropriate place for certain types of community involvement, the
community will use it. Right now, I suspect the uncertainty of the
wiki's future is preventing much contribution to the wiki at all (I
know it has deterred me somewhat).
I totally agree; I would feel exactly the same.
In order to define the role of the wiki, I fell we need (at least IMHO)
to understand the scope of the website too (first?). I have to be
honest: this is where I am having difficulty; there is a lot of content
in the new website, but I am having difficulty understanding under what
criteria it was included, and how it is intended to be organized. But
then, maybe it is just me...

I doubt this will be a problem - a couple of active "watchers" can
resolve this pretty easily, as we have demonstrated in the past. The
wiki spam problem is much less now than it was a couples months ago.
I am not concerned about spam. The community has done a good job
maintaining the wiki all this time, and I think that can continue to be
the case.
However, I would much rather use the "Monobook" skin with the wiki if
it is intended for community-contribution. It was a lot friendlier
for actual contributions while still looking halfway decent. I find
the new theme to be mostly just "pretty" and difficult to navigate for
those who really want to contribute. I really yearn for the "Recent
Changes" link to work from the main wiki page again even - as that is
my first stop usually.
I think it would be better if the wiki had a unified look as the website
(like Mozilla or Ubuntu, for example). But then we need a Drupal theme
first. I know a few people are working a themes, so lets wait to see
what comes out from their efforts.
