Marketing =3D doing something that:
a) sells the product
b) provides a basis for substantial 3rd party developer support
c) provides quick and efficient service/support to the user and
developer base
d) allows for channeling those funds back into development
=2E.because please don't delude yourself and think that you can
provide all the drivers, application and support that people
would need to run OpenBeOS on their hardware.
There is also a BIG difference between "the same reason Linux was
created" and "the reason Linux became what it is today". Without
commercial support and multi-million $$ investment, Linux would
be nowhere near where it is today.
In short: I want to make money with it as a result of satisfying
customers. Satisfying customers costs money to begin with, and
them being happy with what they get makes them more likely to pay
for it. Revenue for us =3D income for developers =3D future for the
OS.
No money, no OS. Maybe an OS, but nothing that would find support
anywhere in the world among developers or marketers, because at
the end of the day, someone's gotta put food on the table. Also
remember that some people will be working on this full-time, and
most definitely not for free.
I wish it was different, but it isn't.
