Yep, 11 million dollars.

Yes and no.

You haven't seen the proposal we submitted, have you? There is a
trade-off. If we get the licence for $0, then we will have to make
the changes available to Palm while at the same time improving
BeOS. Without the licence, I currently don't see any future,
especially if you have to write things from scratch. I don't
think we have the time for that right now, because there are
other factors also playing a role.

Palm will earn money in one way or another. Either we pay them
for the licence or through the code we develop. You can't have
your cake and eat it. And you know what? That's not a bad
situation at all, because if Palm sees the benefit and if they
promote BeOS among their followers, then there might be a synergy
that goes way beyond what we can currently comprehend.

It bought the IP and the assets and the developers, but for their
own purposes, which is NOT the desktop market. They can ONLY gain
=66rom a healthy BeOS, because inevitably it will be connected to
the name Palm.
There's more to it still, but the fact remains that Palm would
want to benefit from the licence, and that is fair enough.=20

I don't expect anyone to work gratis on a commercial venture. If
somebody wants to do it gratis, fine with me, and all strength to
him/her, but under our "concept", everybody working on it would
get rewarded. This, however, doesn't mean that there will be no
volunteers, because the volunteerism is just one way of giving
back what they received in other ways, ie more updates, better
dev. tools, better documentation, and a future of the BeOS in
general.
