Unless you have to work around broken implementations of standard protocols :

Anyway, yes, it's a lot easier (see cd burners as an example), moreover if 
there is the possibility to write a driver at all (read there is some code or 
a manual available), we can be pretty sure that a driver for BSD or Linux 
already exists and while we can't use Linux code directly it can be 
'consulted' for infos about the hardware, saving a LOT of time.
