How did you get stuck? Did the installer crash?
Usually, I don't really pick much here--if I wanted a bunch of stuff, I'd
probably use mandrake (which btw has a trimmed down install now available
as well, 40 MB IMHO). I apt-get install all the stuff I need later. I
think that if beos had this (automatic upgrade...yes, there are graphical
frontends to this w/ the requisite animations).

There is a progeny installer that you can use as well. There is also the
pgi cd, and the libranet installers. All can be freely downloaded.
Libranet is probably your best choice as it's supposed to have an easy
installer and it's the most up to date.
I used
progeny on many systems b/c it has better autodetection. They all can use
the debian repositories.
I like the netinstall, though as it can give you xfs filesystem by
default. Nice.

Sorry, didnt' mean to imply that. In fact, I usually don't post to the
list to answer someone to them, I would just email them privately. I just
wanted the truth to be put out there in public, as I have heard the same
stuff said over and over again that's not true.

My point was that while many linux distros are bloated, they aren't that
way b/c of choice (having bloat or not having bloat is also a choice that
linux gives you). I also wanted to point out that net/open bsd also give
you the same choices, but they are not as bloated as redhat and co as they
install a light system, not unlike debian.
Anyway, I'll try to help you get debian up if you want, off-list. I am
still interested in porting apt to debian. Nobody is going to use it, I
know, but I would learn a lot about it that way.
Having used many package managers, I think that apt is about as perfect as
they come, and that it is just as easy to learn as anything else, and
after 5 minutes of use, much, much easier to use in the long run,
especially if you stick to stable.
