I got the Woody CD's (via jigdo) a week or two ago and
tried installing. I got stuck in that part where you
choose which of the packages you want installed. I
couldn't get out of it so rebooted and took the default
install. In the end, I booted and my flat-panel was
blank -- the system would wait a few moments, tell me
that there was a problem with X, tell me that it was
working on it, then go blank again and stay that way.
I couldn't get out of this cycle so, frustrated, wiped
out the ext2 and swap partitions and put BeOS back on.
Previously I'd been using Mandrake for a few months.

I'm not familiar with the BSD's. I've only ever tried
Mandrake and recently Debian Woody as described above.

My comments were directed at the interaction between the
"choice is good" mentality and the GPL/LGPL; and its
effects on the commercial distros that alt.os-ethusiasts
would be installing in contrast to what I think will
happen to OBOS. (bleh, that was a mouthful :)

Whoa, I'm no opponent. As I mentioned in my original
comment, I think that GNU/Linux is one spicy jambalaya;
that is, it's awesome if you can effectively get it to
do what you want. I can't. [shrug] Yes, I'm inexperienced.

OBOS may end up being a better *desktop* OS than GNU/Linux
because that's its focus (I assume that's what you meant
by your above comment). Sorry if I was spreading FUD --
thanks for letting me know.
