Hmm.  That isn't the way it is on my OSS box (the Thinkpad),  It seems
totally random, just as on the Dell.

I was afraid of that... (:-/)  Any gentle hints as to how I might go
about it?  I have no idea of the innards of the audio chain.  Any
descriptions anywhere?
