[haiku] Re: Network transfer, one Haiku machine to another ?

(Getting back to the original idea of this thread...)
Years ago, there was a ftp file system for BeOS that would allow remote ftp servers to be mounted like any other drive, and GNOME does this currently, but personally I would love to see something like this net_fs or something BeOS/Haiku specific. Ideally, I think it should be something that supports Bonjour or some other network resource discovery protocol for automatically determining what can be mounted, and support for extended attributes, querying, and preferably some authentication/security as well.

From what I remember, Ingo's netfs does all of the above. It detects other servers automatically, displays their shared folders and handles authentication. It is lacking in the area of configuration (setting up shared folders, users and passwords) and more seamless integration (in Tracker). The setup is currently also more involved and requires UserlandFS to be installed (which is available as optional package, though).

I know I stated a few minutes ago that solutions don't need to be over-engineered, and this email of my may contradict that, but I think this would represent a mature BeOS/Haiku implementation of this sort of service.

The first step would be updating it to work again with the current FS API. But Ingo is currently busy with more pressing issues. :-)

I would still love other networked FS solutions to be integrated as well, like the mentioned FTP FS and a CIFS client. These should all integrate into Tracker via a common infrastructure (i.e. how the user can access them).
