if you have this question, it might be best if you look at 
Atheos or one of the other hundred million OS projects
that try to create something new.

every year groups of people try to create something new
and none that i've seen are very notable...

besides, i think the idea as everyone clearly points out here,
is to first recreate what was, and then extend upon that in
new cutting edge ways. 

besides, quite a few (if not many) of the ideas from BeOS
are still quite "cutting edge".
