It doesn't make much sense to continue working on the old version, when 
that one is not open source.
Unless newer versions of the tree rely on language features / API's from the previous release in order to build. This is highly likely, and I won't be able to tell until I have a chance to look at the 1.6 tree.
The sad fact is, that chances are good we'll need a baseline 'working' 1.5 before we get 1.6 going. Granted, we won't need all the class libraries, just enough to get javac, javah, etc. going.
