Hi,
In light of the recent messages on this list about Java, we had quite a
bit of discussion on this topic among the Haiku admins. One of the key
developer's Bryan Varner has clearly and wisely spoken on this matter,
but we thought you would also want to know Haiku's position, so here it
is. I am writing this is on behalf of the core Haiku developers.
Haiku endorses the Java for BeOS port initiated by BeUnited.org, and we
will keep supporting the advancement of this project. Having said that,
Java for BeOS is not a Haiku project per se, and development is still in
the hands of the original devs, not the Haiku devs.
So while we are excited of what the recent announcement of SUN Java
being open sourced could eventually mean to Haiku, we are not in a
position to say what will happen from here on, including with regards to
the question of where the sources of the BeUnited.org port will
eventually be hosted. The desire would probably be that the sources end
up in the main Java repository alongside the windows/solaris/linux
branches, but this is still not known.
With regards to Bernd's offer, this should actually be addressed to the
Java for BeOS team, as they are the ones who would call the shots when
it comes to this project. If the code is useful and can be used, we
would certainly like to see it put to use, but that's not our call to
make.It would be nice if the dev(s) who actually wrote the code came
forward and joined the BU effort, and in doing so helped make Java a
reality sooner for the whole BeOS platform at large. :-)
Hope this clarifies Haiku's position on this matter.
