Greetings one and all, As some of you may have noticed, at the end of January Google officially announced its plans to hold their Summer of Code program. For those who don't know, it is an opportunity for scholastic students to work with an open source project during May through August. This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain coding experience in an open source ecosystem such as Haiku, while at the same time receiving monetary compensation for successful projects. Additional details can be found on the GSoC homepage [0]. A general GSoC2010 flyer and individual pieces of artwork are already available[1]. Haiku's preliminary project ideas page is currently available on the bug tracker's wiki[2]. This page needs feedback, particularly by developers to indicate: * which could be a stand-alone project * which need to be paired with additional projects * which projects are simply not suitable In addition to project ideas, it would be appreciated to consider participating as a mentor. In past years, the pool of mentors has remained largely unchanged. I encourage you to show support and appreciation of their efforts by volunteering your time to mentor a student and help them grow into a longterm contributor. If you were a mentor in previous years and do not plan to participate this year, please send a message to the haiku-mentors mailing list or to myself. Some notes on how Haiku's participation could be structured is also detailed on that wiki[3]. Information pertinent to both prospective students and mentors is included. Eventually, this information will be finalized on Haiku's Drupal website[4] --mmadia [0] GSoC homepage: Note: Later in the week this page should be updated sometime with information for 2010. http://socghop.appspot.com/ [1] GSoC2010 artwork: http://code.google.com/p/google-summer-of-code/downloads/list?can=2&q=2010+logo http://code.google.com/p/google-summer-of-code/wiki/GsocFlyers Haiku specific links: [2] http://dev.haiku-os.org/wiki/GoogleSummerOfCodeIdeas [3] http://dev.haiku-os.org/wiki/GoogleSummerOfCodeAdministration [4] http://www.haiku-os.org/community/gsoc
