[openbeos] Re: Innovation: Design and Programming

Okay, where to start...

As a huge fan of the Mac, and someone who would certainly like to see
M$ disappear, I think the article is very well-written, and generally
agree with it.

Apple has made a very large number of innovations, Pascal is FAR
superior to C, and C++ IS a horrible language (I feel sorry for those
on this list who have been mislead otherwise).

True, the BeOS does not have any real, unique innovations. It does
nothing that is really new... but those things it does, it does better
than most of the other operating systems on the market. It is not the
only OS doing SMP, but it does SMP better than nearly any other OS I
have ever seen or worked with. And LIGHTNING-fast... faster than DOS
in some cases!

And this is in SPITE of choosing C++ as a programming language; imagine
what they could have accomplished with Object Pascal, for example.

The BeOS is not really about some innovative INTERFACE, but about
innovative IMPLEMENTATION, something that Be did VERY well. (Microsoft
has failed miserably in both categories, otoh.)

I am certainly looking forward to the release of OpenBEOS, or whatever
it is being renamed to. I won't give up my Macs for it, but I've been
using Windoze less and less lately, and may give up my NT system in
favor of it... or at least reduce its size during the next reinstall
cycle. I'm about due for one.

Modify the equilibrium of the vertically-oriented particle decelerator to
result in the reestablishment of its resistance to counterproductive
atmospheric penetration.
