Some Icons use shadow effects, but the shadow projection is not always consistent.
Maybe a silly question, but if a decision was made to use shadows, would't it be logical to specify the location of the (virtual) lightsource relative to the position of the icon?


In fact (what follows is rambling) one way to achieve this is to design icons as true 3D objects, and then use (for example) OpenGL to render them on a projected surface from a certain angle with the shadow effects of a defined light source.
Different icon sets could be designed independently, and they could all end up having the same look and feel without restricting creativity...
