Hi... me again...

To keep the discussion open, here is my proposal for a news item:

<h2>Clarifying the Haiku Icon Contest</h2>

<p>It appears there has been some confusion about the purpose and nature of the "Haiku Icon Contest". The purpose should be clear: We want to develop design guidelines for the entire Haiku icon set. The contest is a form of brain storming process in which we want to summon good ideas. It might turn out that one submission is a clear winner. It might also turn out that the final guide lines are developed from good ideas seen in different submissions. To give us a solid base for the discussion following the contest, we have come up with a couple of rating categories which express different areas of importance within an icon design. Yes, while we did speak of "voting" earlier, we have adjusted this to a "rating in different categories", because we think it is more insightful.</p>

<p>So you should view this "contest" as one step within a process to develop design guidelines. Equally important to the open discussion on the Haiku mailing list and after that the actual work of creating the final icons.</p>
In the spirit of making a constructive contribution, here is a slightly different version that I think would address all the issues at hand. Feel free to use, modify or discard it as seen fit. :-)

Since it appears that there may have been some confusion about the <url>recently announced Haiku Icon Contest</url>, we want to make a few clarifications in order to clear up any doubts about the contest once and for all.

The objective of the Haiku Icon Contest is to help develop design guidelines for the eventual creation of a full Haiku Icon Set. Just to give you an idea, the guidelines would look something like http://tango.freedesktop.org, but would be specific to the Haiku Operating System.

In order to achieve this goal, we are accepting artwork sample submissions per the rules outlined in the "Contest Rules" section of the <url>Haiku Icon Contest official page</url>. The submitted artwork will be rated in several areas by means of an online system. The rating system will be open, so anyone interested will be able to participate; take a peak at the <url>beta version rating page</url> to see what the rating system will look like.

During the rating period, an open discussion will then be held in the Haiku mailing list, as a brain storming exercise leading to the final Haiku icon design guidelines which will provide the base for the creation of the final artwork.

Although the final icon set for Haiku will be the result of a collaborative effort through the rating of the submitted artwork and an open discussion in the Haiku mailing list, the contest will have a âBest Rated Entryâ, which will be awarded a special recognition certificate from the Haiku project.

For other details about the contest, please refer to the <url>Haiku Icon Contest</url> page, which will be kept up to date with the latest information.

<b>Haiku Icon Contest</b>
- Deadline for submissions: September 1, 2006
- Rating period: September 2 â 23, 2006

I have also created an "Haiku Icon Contest" button (small jpeg file attached). Feel free to post it on the Haiku website, perhaps at the top of the right hand column with a link to the contest page in the Haiku wiki (www.haiku-os.org/wiki/index.php?title=Icon_Contest). This will make the contest visible even if the announcement scrolls down due to more news being posted. This could also be used in other websites as a way to spread the word about the contest. Again, feel free to use, modify or discard it at will.

I know that I may come across as being a picky. I also know that the devs would rather spend their time coding than on thinking how to best word an announcement. Perhaps it may be a good idea to have a "communications team" that can take the time and put thought into how to best communicate with the community and the outside world. This could be very beneficial for the project in many ways, and I would volunteer to start such an undertaking.

Cheers,

Koki
