[openbeos] Re: How can we recruit more programmers ?

[Reply to all what's been said]
Few tests have aleray been made.
About asking in Universities and courses:
I've been giving some courses on BeOS coding last year. My school
(http://www.iseb.fr) gave me the authorization to do so. They ghosted there
PC park and I got 30 stations working on BeOS ready for people to give it a
try. It first started by C++ and then application to BeOS. Few fellows came
and many gave up for different reasons: "What's that shit, I just want to
code under Windows to kick my candle. I won't learn this." was a reason for
most of them (thought that was a group so when one leave the others follow.)
Anyway, I had (only !)one really involved and interested. We hadn't much time
to do a real app but he got a real good overview, the feeling of the API and
how to read the BeBook and use it. He asked for Written courses (it was only
oral courses) and said I would do only one if more than one guy would be
interested.
I may plan to restart next year this experience but I won't if it's still for
one geeck.
About documentation: There's the beginning of an introduction to BeOS
programming but it's only in french. (and not done by me...)
Another beginning is the series of Newsletter about a basic app some of you
wrote. Moreover, O'Reilly book my get free soon. (That would be great)
Anyway, I really think we should go toward universities to show us and get
geeck interested. But for this we need to show something -and not just a
Kernel).
But most important: I think the community should support those who try. I've
myself learned this way (thx again Philippe, mmu, Daix and Yak). There are
just right now (in this week) 4 people in france who just said they want to
code for BeOS ! We should do anything they want for them to try and
inevitably...to be hooked. One of them is a C# coder so should be up at speed
quiet fast. One other, a friend of mine, just sent me a mail yesterday: "I
can't take anymore of Windows and Linux, I give up coding for them. I no
longer have pleasure with them. I just unpacked my Amiga that much I can't
take it. I hope to be able to try BeOS soon, in fact all my hopes are there.
I wanted to code a Cubase-like for Win or Linux but I don't want anymore and
I hope to find a place to do so in BeOS."
He cannot have BeOS right now because his hardware seems to not work
(specially USB) and so he is waiting for Zeta to give a try.
And for instance, this guy is a scener, he goes to coding party quiet often
and therefore, that could be a good ambassador.

That's all, that's the way I think we should proceed but as always, it's my
opinion.

my 2 cents,

Olivier
