Well, the MacOS X kernel is actually a modified MACH kernel, used in a
foundational OS called "Darwin," which is an open-source project on
Apple's web site. Darwin DOES have an x86 version available.
I know. i have it on cdrom ;)
Many of the GUI's "new" features, BTW, are dressed up versions of
features that were offered in the NextStep operating system (remember
the black cubes?) Check out www.gnustep.org for more info (an an open
source project to clone the interface).
Gnustep: it's on top of an X server. and the X server was designed for
network transparency, not for speed. I think the X architecture should be
used for the purposes it was meant for, and a new graphics server for *nix
should be made for pure desktop use, designed with only speed in mind.
Okay, there are lost of extensions to X to speed it up, but they don't
solve the problem, they only try to make the symptoms less. making GnuSTEP
is a nice idea, but i my opinion wrong. all the work is "wasted" because
it's not on top of a decent graphics server. i think GNU should make a new
a new graphics server before making yet another interface on top of a slow
graphics engine. But that's only an opinion.
Eike.
