Well, the MacOS X kernel is actually a modified MACH kernel, used in a
foundational OS called "Darwin," which is an open-source project on
Apple's web site.  Darwin DOES have an x86 version available.

Many of the GUI's "new" features, BTW, are dressed up versions of
features that were offered in the NextStep operating system (remember
the black cubes?)  Check out www.gnustep.org for more info (an an open
source project to clone the interface).

If someone would take the time to put these together...
