First of all, this is not really about attacking Karl or his work. But
his good intentions should not, IMO, be given priority over the best
interest of the project.
We have already discussed this on the mailing list not long ago (when
Karl's packages included proprietary BeOS software). The problem is that
he distributes Haiku-branded packages which can very easily be perceived
as being a product of the Haiku project. Those in the know are aware
that that is not the case. But as Haiku keeps gaining visibility, more
and more people not familiar with the project are being exposed to
Haiku, and it is very easy for this people to find the packages in
Haikuware, make an opinion based on them.
This is problematic because we do not have oversight whatsoever over
those packages, and people can potentially associate our brand to
something does not live to our standards or that may be legally
doubtful. As I said, this potential for misperception is more likely to
happen as Haiku keeps gaining visibility, so now more than ever we need
to be very guarded about protecting our brand and what Haiku stands for.
Cheers,
Koki
