[haiku] Re: GSoC: Writing native interfaces for ported applications

Hi all,

I read a project idea a couple of weeks back about writing native interfaces
for VLC and Transmission, and was wondering whether that's still on the
table?

I'm not much of a fan of ported applications, but these two are good
exceptions, and as VLC has been ported to so many systems,
it definitely deserves a breath of fresh air.

If any other programs deserve or require such treatment, then so be it!

Anyway, that's my question...

We don't mind ports, if done properly. Writing a native interface is a good thing and opens the way for a good port. Enforcing the UNIX concepts into Haiku is something we don't like :)

I would say you are free to build a proposal around that if you feel so. Keep in mind you need to have enough work for 3 month : I'm not sure writing a GUI for Transmission is enough work , VLC might last a little longer with all the settings dialogs (but there may be less settings on Haiku). A proper port of VLC including binding to our Media kit, could make a full project, but you may want to check if the code from vlc0.8 days is still useable or not.

As for other candidates for porting, I'd like to get scilab running on Haiku, because I need it for work. But that's only my personal need. Try to find an application you miss, as working on something you will actually use is way more motivating.
