I assume I am the first one you are speaking about. I actually can't
understand what I have said that could give you that impression. Sorry
if I disgusted you, but I think you probably misread my mail in that
case.

What I am afraid of is that there are those who believe GE has solved
the problem of feature-creep and direction for R2 and beyond. It has
not, and it is unlikely that it ever will.

Micahel has completely convinced me that GE is an important part of
Haiku. An inclusive forum for people to post forward-looking ideas be
they heavily involved with the project or not. However were Haiku
released today, I agree with Helmar that we are really no further on
the question of "right, what shall I do now" that the developers might
start asking themselves tomorrow; or not thanks to GE anyway - I'm know
Axel has plenty of ideas for what to do next!

Personally I think the approach of finishing R1 first is the correct
way to go. R1 will be in no way a 7-year old operating system. Windows
XP is basically win 95 with a new kernel, better hardware support,
updated explorer and a few other bits and bobs, but with the same basic
win32 API. "Windows XP is to win 95 as Haiku R1 is to BeOS R5" to my
mind.

I'm actually quite confident about the future of Haiku, but not because
of GE. I'm sure the core developers have their own lists about what
they want to see in the future, possibly with some ideas drawn from GE.
That's the way I think it should be - people who intimately know the
system be responsible for deciding the direction (to ensure
consistency), but bearing in mind ideas of others. Hence why I said a
firm hand on the tree would be required post R1. An OS designed simply
by anybody being allowed to include anything they think is cool is not
an OS I would want to use.

IMHO, Haiku is in safe hands.

Sorry if I offended anyone and for sparking off such an impassioned
discussion; neither were intended.

Simon
