Hi Ryan,

now that I have fixed the bug in configure, the check works for the original
(Be-provided) compilers, too (they report version 2.9 not 2.95, which was what 
the configure script was expecting).

Hopefully, this check will keep other people from going down that (pretty 
dark) corridor of compiler inconsistencies... >;o)
