Maybe we could offer an option to customise the front page, much like
the Google Personalised Home. One logs in and gets direct views of the
contents which interests him most. And there are always cookies to
remember the login (in hashed form, please!)

Yes, this is what I was proposing also.
At a minimum, once a user has registered and logged in, some amount of
"newbie" content can be reduced to a link (such as the "about haiku" text) -
but ultimately, I am the type of person that would probably want some
customizability of the site.
I am guessing that Drupal supports this, but if not, it probably wouldn't be
worth the extra effort right now.
