Not to disagree with Michael too bluntly, but we have similar issues
with the locale library as part of OpenTracker. As soon as OT will use
this library (and it will), Haiku is more or less urged to adopt it as
well if it wanted to keep OT as part of R1.
Of course, it doesn't have to be part of the public API, and might just
be considered experimental within Haiku. But there is nothing that
could prevent us from making it public one day - even before R2.

With icons (and SVG) it's a special issue, anyway, since we will need
to replace all those icons we have. I think we would be kinda stupid if
we asked for a new set of 32x32 and 16x16 8-bit icons only. Instead, we
should have the complete set as SVG or some higher resolution PNGs that
we can (if the need arises) scale down to 32x32 or smaller, even with
manual tweaking (or with Stephan's anticipated hinting icon renderer).

In this light, I would welcome extensions towards this to OpenTracker.
Dunno if they'll make it into R1, but they don't have to wait for R2
for sure.

Bye,
   Axel.
