A lot of this talk also reminds me of the Tunes.org project. Which
produced a lot of paper but no code. Their idea was to provide an OS
(or rather: a glorified interpreter) where the programs would consist
of modules that would be loaded only when needed (like a spellchecking
module, an IM module) while all the 'programs' were supposed to be
more like readily editable scripts summoning up the needed modules
with the right interconnections; all this would adhere to certain open
data standards so that porting to newer OSes would be painless.

So in conclusion, maybe this should move to the GE list. :)
(and having filetype-handlers is really a huuuge step in the right direction)
